My name is Cornelius and I am a Critical Care Flight Paramedic for the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter Service. I’d love if you could spare a few minutes for me to share a patient story with you from a few years ago, when we were called to an emergency in Central Hawke’s Bay.
Colin Watson-Paul and his hardworking shearing gang were getting through a mob of sheep on a farm near Pourerere beach. They are often working around the area shearing big numbers of sheep for local farmers. On this occasion, to combat the sweltering heat, they had fans going in the shed to try cooling them down. One of the team went to move the fan when he was thrown backwards, immediately knocking unconscious with a massive electrical shock.
Colin says “we very quickly realised that the only chance he had was the Rescue Helicopter and so we called 111. They were activated immediately, and it felt as if they were here in a very short time. “We were all very happy to hear the chopper when they arrived. Having the Critical Care Paramedic arrive at the scene was such a relief. He did a quick assessment and started treatment immediately. They took off as soon as the patient was stabilised and he was back in hospital in under an hour from the accident. I am firmly convinced that their swift assistance saved his life that day, so I knew I wanted to do something to give back to support the rescue crew.”
Colin has now become one of our cherished regular donors, giving on a monthly basis to our Rescue Helicopter Service. He adds “I felt that setting up a regular automatic payment was important and I just don’t have to worry about it now. I know that there is a regular amount coming to you guys each month and it was very easy to set up. I don’t know when or if I will ever need you again, but I know that making this regular donation means you will be there if I ever do.”
